Flotation therapy got its start back in the mid-1950s but didn’t catch on for about twenty years after initial research began. Throughout the 70s and 80s, North America experienced a rise and fall in interest related to floating while Europe saw a steady increase in the use of this modality. Today, we have substantial data which suggests that floating offers a number of benefits. As we prepare for a new year ahead, we can’t think of a better way to start anew than with a consistent floating routine.

Benefits of Flotation Therapy

Some of the proven benefits of floating include:

Stress Relief

Studies have shown that many of the chronic illnesses that people struggle with relation to their overall stress level. It comes as no surprise to see that flotation therapy is regarded as an antidote to stress. However, the fact that floating can improve symptoms of stress-related illnesses like depression and anxiety may not be as easily recognized.  In a 2014 study published in the Journal of Complimentary & Behavioral Medicine, researchers suggested that floating may reduce the systemic response to stress, thus inducing deep relaxation and increased mindfulness in daily life.

Improved Sleep

Multiple case studies have confirmed that a large number of people who float one to two times per week experience a decrease in insomnia and general improvement in the quality of sleep. One reason this could be is that floating puts the brain into a theta state, the same state that occurs just before falling asleep or waking up or during meditation. Another reason why floating and better sleep go hand-in-hand is because the float tank is filled with extraordinary amounts of magnesium in order to create buoyancy.

About Magnesium

The World Health Organization has suggested that approximately 75% of adults are deficient in magnesium, a mineral that is integral to numerous physical processes. Without sufficient magnesium intake, the risk of heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, chronic headaches, and several other health complaints increases. Magnesium aids in optimal physical wellness and muscle recovery, making flotation therapy ideal for just about everyone.
