If you have browsed some of your favorite celebrities’ Instagram feeds lately or flipped through the pages of a magazine, you have probably noticed that LED light facials are the new “it” thing. In reality, LED light facials, or low-level light therapy, has been around for some time now. We are pleased to offer Futura Face™ treatment to members and clients of our Sterling, VA day spa. Here, we discuss why more people are adding a series of LED facials to their pre-holiday beauty routine.
An LED facial is a type of light therapy that is non-invasive, painless, even relaxing. The treatment uses low-level light to accomplish specific goals. For example, red light is used to stimulate cellular activity. In particular, red LED, or light-emitting diodes, provokes fibroblasts to produce more collagen. As you may know, collagen is the primary building block of plump, smooth, radiant skin. Because LED has an anti-inflammatory effect, this type of facial may be performed after a more aggressive treatment such as laser therapies that cause redness. LED facials may also involve blue light, which is effective at destroying the bacteria that lives beneath the skin and causes acne.
Do LED Light Facials Really Work?
The big question is not necessarily how LED facials work, but if they work. According to celebrities like Jessica Alba and many happy clients who have undergone this treatment, as well as clinical studies, they do.
A recent study conducted by a photo therapy expert stated that LED therapy is proving to be an effective medico-scientific modality, with a significant increase in evidence substantiating its mode of action. Some of this evidence includes the use of LED in plastic surgery practices as a method of increasing blood flow to the face.
What you Need to Know
With evidence mounting to confirm the safety and benefits of LED facials, more people are jumping on the bandwagon of the anti-aging trend. What you need to know before scheduling your treatment is that, while change will happen, it won’t happen overnight. Some people who have been treated with blue light LED for acne have reported overnight success as it relates to clearer skin. However, one treatment will not put an end to acne for good. Furthermore, when red LED light is utilized to reduce the signs of aging it can take up to four treatment sessions to see the desired result.
The reason that LED facials produce results over time is that each low-level light treatment acts on the body’s natural capabilities to produce collagen. The more the supportive matrix of collagen is remodeled with healthy new protein, the better the skin will look.
There are LED devices made for home use. However, studies indicate that this method only works if you use it daily. The device used at Aria Med Spa is medical-grade, featuring 8 settings, 8 wavelengths, and the power of 267 LEDs for maximum effect.
