Cryotherapy has been one of our most popular services for some time now. We are proud to offer therapies like this to help our clients reach the pinnacle of health and performance. You may have heard of whole-body cryotherapy. It can be conducted in a small room or in a chamber that encloses around the body only, leaving the head out. The latter is what is available at ARIA MediSpa.
The cryotherapy chamber can cool the temperature around the body to negative 323°F. There are several benefits to doing this, including relief from arthritis pain (due to decreased inflammation). The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of cryotherapy are also good for soothing skin irritation and even for managing mood disorders. If you’ve wondered about whole body cryotherapy, you may also have questions. We’ll discuss a few here.
Will I feel claustrophobic during my cryotherapy session?
People who have never had cryotherapy often worry that once they are in the chamber, they cannot get out. This isn’t the case. Most people do not struggle with feelings of claustrophobia using a cryotherapy chamber because it is open at the top. During your session, you will be able to talk with us and let us know if you would like your session to end at any time.
How are such cold temperatures tolerable?
Cryotherapy is fueled by nitrogen gas. This is a dry cooling so is very different than what one might experience in an ice bath. Because temperature is delivered as a dry gas, it doesn’t feel as cold as it is. The skin and soft tissue do not “freeze” in these temperatures, but a systemic response occurs after only 2 to 4 minutes in the chamber.
How will I feel after my cryotherapy session?
Whole body cryotherapy stimulates the release of endorphins, chemicals that invigorate the body. The endorphin energy that occurs during treatment can last up to 8 hours. With a consistent regimen of whole-body cryotherapy, people notice benefits like improved physical comfort, greater physical performance, and an increase in metabolism (each session burns between 500 and 800 calories!).
How often can I have whole-body cryotherapy?
Depending on your goals, you can have cryotherapy sessions a few times a week. Studies indicate that it is safe to have cryotherapy as often as twice a day. That’s a lot! Most people don’t need that much, but frequent sessions can be very helpful for those in heavy training or who are rehabilitating from an injury.
