Are Your Habits Aging Your Skin?
- Posted on: Jun 1 2018
We know that aging is a natural part of life; that we cannot avoid it altogether. However, there are several avenues we can take on our journey here. Some can slow the pace of aging, some can correct signs of aging as they occur, and some paths we want to avoid due to their strong likelihood of leading us to more lines and wrinkles than we’d like. Here, we want to point out a few places you want to set up road-blocks if you want to preserve your youthful skin.
We’ll begin with the damaging effects of the sun because this is the most common wrong-turn people make with their skin. Scientific data has confirmed that we can gain benefits from natural sunlight. Those warming rays invite the body to produce vitamin D, and we need this to sustain mood and general wellness. However, too much sunlight leads to rapid collagen breakdown, which leads to loose, sagging skin. We don’t want that. To boost vitamin D, it is best to sit in the early morning sunshine for just a few minutes a day. Skip the sunglasses. All other outdoor time should include broad-spectrum sunscreen. Remember to apply around your eyes and on the bridge of your nose.
Burning Both Ends of Your Candle
We’ve heard the term “burning the candle at both ends” used as a sort of accolade. The truth is, there is no value to overdoing it. Work smart, not hard. Studies indicate that we are actually more productive when we are well-rested. Also, sleep is vital to cortisol reduction in the body. Cortisol is the stress chemical that attacks collagen. Sleep lowers cortisol levels and also repairs DNA damage.
Overdoing the Nightcaps
Alcohol consumption can offer certain benefits, but it isn’t a stretch to say that it’s easy to go overboard. Science points to beneficial aspects of a glass of wine a day. Somehow, though, we’ve reached a point where we literally can obtain wine on demand (thanks, Amazon!). It is important to keep in mind that alcoholic beverages are diuretic, which means too many nightcaps or brunch-time mimosas can leave your skin parched and vulnerable to premature aging.
