Shaving the face is not one of the tips one would expect to hear from top cosmetic dermatologists and plastic surgeons. However, not only do physicians and estheticians love this treatment but A-Listers do, too. Dermaplaning, also called dermablading, is one of the most popular services celebs schedule before the red carpet. Here, we discuss details to help you understand why.
What is dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is not the shaving your favorite guy does at the bathroom sink every morning; it is shaving with a surgical-grade scalpel. Clearly, it is not a treatment one does on their own. Dermaplaning is performed by a licensed, highly-trained professional using a sterile instrument. The purpose of this treatment is not to remove hair, like normal shaving (although it does remove the “peach fuzz” on the face) but to deeply exfoliate the skin without chemicals or abrasion. Dermaplaning gently and methodically scrapes the scalpel blade over the skin to remove dead surface cells.
Why would someone want to do this? There are several reasons. Dead cells don’t do anything for the complexion, and yet they adhere to the epidermis. Dead cells can clog pores and they block the penetration of skincare products into deeper layers of the skin. Removing these cells immediately softens the skin and brightens the complexion. Without a layer of cells hovering on the epidermis, pores are less likely to become clogged, which can decrease the frequency of breakouts. Finally, the skin can absorb the fullness of skincare products.
What does it feel like?
A straight-razor shave may sound unpleasant but it isn’t. Remember, men have been shaving in this way for well over a century and, when done well the results are spectacular. Dermaplaning is performed on dry skin using short, feather-like strokes. The blade can feel dry and scratchy moving over the skin. With the exception of very sensitive skin, all skin types and tones can undergo dermaplaning with very few, mild effects.
After treatment, clients can expect their skin to be slightly red. This can last for up to 24 hours, so it is not recommended to undergo dermaplaning the same day as a big event unless you have done so previously. Many clients report that the beneficial effects of dermaplaning peak two to three days after treatment. Results can last up to six weeks before exfoliation is repeated. In the interim, clients benefit from the use of medical-grade skincare products that support cellular turnover.
