Have You Tried Salt Therapy? Here’s Why You Should!

At ARIA MediSpa, clients can partake in numerous services that build better health and well-being. We do not consider ourselves an average day spa. In our spacious facility, clients can foster strength, flexibility, and peace of mind in our yoga classes. They can diminish the effects of dietary and environmental damage through our detox program, or improve their appearance by scheduling body and facial services. One of our beneficial services that sits below people’s radar is salt therapy. Here, we discuss what this service is and what it can do for you.

What is Salt Therapy?

Salt therapy is also referred to as halotherapy. “Halo” is a Greek prefix for salt. According to writings, halotherapy may have originated centuries ago in Eastern Europe. In the natural salt mines of Poland, workers appeared to have better skin and respiratory health than miners working in other types of caves where no salt was present. During WWII, there were reports of refugees experiencing improved breathing after hiding in salt caves.

The National Institutes of Health has described salt therapy as inhaling micronized dry salt within a chamber that mimics the environment of a natural salt cave. The studies outlining the various benefits of salt therapy have paved the way for salt therapy rooms to sprout up all around the world. We are proud to be one of the few salt therapy facilities in Sterling, VA. Our salt room has been developed to achieve a naturally-formed microclimate that is hypo-bacterial and allergen-free.

How Salt Therapy Works

Most adults spend more time indoors these days than outdoors. Studies suggest that indoor environments, serviced by computer screens, cell phones, and other devices, have only about negative ions. Most of the ions, atoms that take on a charge, are positive. In a small area of nature, specifically around moving water, approximately 20,000 negative ions can be found. These are the atoms that the body and mind need for optimal wellness. Salt creates negative ions.

Multiple studies have been performed to discern the benefits of negative ions in salt therapy. While scientists continue to explore exactly how negative ions influence the body, it is believed that exposure to these atoms increases the amount of oxygen in the blood.  Numerous anecdotal reports show promising advantages of salt therapy, including lower depression scores, reduced inflammation in the lungs, increased lung capacity, improved dermatologic health with a reduction in issues such as acne and eczema, and a greater sense of well-being.

We are happy to continue serving clients from the Sterling area. For more information on salt therapy and our spa services, call 703-444-2800.
