Why More Kids are Doing Yoga

Yoga Studio. Hot Yoga Asburn VA, Kids Yoga Leesburg VA, Yoga Reston VAYoga is an ancient practice that has become increasingly popular in recent years due to its beneficial aspects of health and wellness. Various types of yoga are now taught in gyms and yoga studios across the country, and we are also seeing a handful of educational institutions now offering classes for the younger demographic.

Aria Medical Spa is proud to host yoga classes in our Sterling Himalayan Salt Yoga Studio for adults of all ages; and now, children in our area have an open invitation to join in our Kids Yoga Series. Here, we discuss some of the ways that yoga benefits children.

Yoga means to yoke or union. Through yoga practice, the body, mind, and spirit become integrated and easier to attune to. Yoga is not affiliated with any religious practice, nor is it solely exercise. According to studies, there are several ways in which the guided practice of stretching and breathing can enhance one’s life experience.

The Physical Benefits of Yoga are Just the Beginning

Most people are aware that a good yoga practice can increase flexibility, and that being flexible reduces a person’s risk of injury during sports or other activities. Yoga is also supportive of physical coordination and balance. In addition to balance and flexibility, holding the body in particular poses for short periods of time also builds muscle strength. These are all wonderful benefits, but they are just the tip of the iceberg.

Something happens during yoga practice that, according to studies, translates into valuable childhood lessons. Yoga introduces children to self-discipline, integrity, and gratitude. Therefore, children who engage in yoga build self-esteem. Also, yoga teachers who routinely work with children notice that many young people gain an inquisitiveness that makes self-discovery feel like play. Yoga classes for children don’t focus on getting the poses “right;” they focus on respecting the body and developing the mental stamina to hold poses, and also to simply get up and try again during the learning curve.

Because yoga requires focus and concentration, benefits may be seen in the classroom and on report-cards. Because yoga is a philosophy of mind-body connection, children often become more aware of their power to react appropriately in social situations, and they gain a sense of peace through the “release valve” of yoga. Because learning the poses taught in class requires effort, children gain confidence in their abilities, which transfers to all other areas of life.
